Trendlines & Trend Deconstruction

Learn how trendlines reveal momentum, trend strength and early signs of market breakdown.
QUICK PLAYBOOK
Trendline Rules
  • Follow structure, not lines
  • Wait for confirmation after breaks
  • Never trade trendlines alone
  • Watch for liquidity sweeps
  • Trade the retest, not emotion

Trendlines help traders understand trend direction, momentum and market reactions. They act as dynamic support and resistance, but structure matters more than lines alone.

What Trendlines Really Show

A trendline connects important swing points and helps visualize the strength of a trend.

In an uptrend, trendlines usually connect higher lows.

In a downtrend, trendlines usually connect lower highs.

Trendlines can help traders understand:

  • Trend direction
  • Momentum strength
  • Potential reaction zones
  • Areas where liquidity may build

Trendlines only matter when price structure supports the idea.

Trendlines Are Not Exact Levels

Many beginners treat trendlines like perfect signals. This creates bad entries.

Price often sweeps above or below trendlines before the real move begins.

Wick deviations are normal. Context always matters more than perfect touches.

Strong traders treat trendlines as zones, not exact lines.

How Trends Break Down

Most trends weaken in stages before reversing.

  1. Momentum slows
Smaller impulses and weaker reactions begin to appear.
  2. Liquidity sweep
Price briefly breaks the trendline or swing level and quickly pulls back.
  3. Break of Structure (BOS)
The market confirms weakness and changes direction.
  4. Retest
Price revisits the broken area and offers confirmation.

A trendline break alone is not confirmation. Structure confirms the move.

How To Trade Trendlines

  • Wait for clean structure confirmation
  • Watch for liquidity sweeps around trendline taps
  • Use BOS as confirmation
  • Look for retests before entering
  • Never trade trendlines without context

The highest probability setup often comes after a trendline break, BOS and retest.

Quick Recap
